Techniques for performance measurement are an integral part of a revenue management (RM) system. The Revenue Opportunity Model (ROM) is a widely known method to measure revenue management performance. While adapting the ROM to recent developments of revenue management science - i.e. the advancement from leg-based to network-based RM controls and the recent transition from independent to dependent demand structures - the question of applicability and in particular the validity of the ROM has become increasingly important. In this thesis both independent and dependent demand structures in a network-based ROM are modeled and its main properties are investigated. Furthermore, different aspects of airline RM are considered to make the application of the ROM possible in practice. Not only does this thesis cover a disaggregation of the aggregated network ROM measures to single legs, but also to single RM components. A novel simulation-based approach to investigate the ROM properties is introduced particularly to measure its robustness against errors in the estimated unconstrained demand. The RM system used in the simulation environment reflects all main components and RM methods in use by a large network airline, particularly regarding state-of-the-art demand modeling and optimization models.

Chapter 9 studies shared resources and efficiency decomposition in two-stage networks. Chapter 10 introduces an approach to computing the technical efficiency scores for a dynamic production network and its sub-processes. Chapter 11 presents a slacks-based network DEA. Chapter 12 discusses a DEA modeling technique for a two-stage network process where the inputs of the second stage include both the outputs from the first stage and additional inputs to the second stage. Chapter 13 presents an efficiency measurement methodology for multi-stage production systems. Chapter 14 discusses network DEA models, both static and dynamic. The discussion also explores various useful objective functions that can be applied to the models to find the optimal allocation of resources for processes within the black box, that are normally invisible to DEA. Chapter 16 presents shared resources models for deriving aggregate measures of bank-branch performance, with accompanying component measures that make up that aggregate value. Chapter 17 examines a set of manufacturing plants operating under a single umbrella, with the objective being to use the component or function measures to decide what might be considered as each plant's core business. Chapter 18 considers problem settings where there may be clusters or groups of DMUs that form a hierarchy. The specific case of a set off electric power plants is examined in this context. Chapter 19 models bad outputs in two-stage network DEA. Chapter 20 presents an application of network DEA to performance measurement of Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. Chapter 21 presents an application of a two-stage network DEA model for examining the performance of 30 U.S. airline companies. Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Over the last two decades, real options analysis (ROA) has become a fundamental part of project evaluation. Its increasing use in academia and corporations as well as its application to a wide range of industries make it a valuable tool in finance and accounting departments around the world. Classical capital budgeting approaches like net present value (NPV) techniques do not account for additional flexibility and are therefore a very static measurement. In addition to this, a further core factor is the strategic aspect of the investment decision. Companies often make decisions according to strategic reasons. This raises the question of how the bargaining power is divided between a seller and a buyer. Furthermore, the influence of the hold-up problem on the two involved players is analyzed. Finally, the trade surplus of the investment is divided between the seller on the one hand and the buyer on the other hand using a game theoretic approach to model this relationship. The airline industry is examined in this paper as it offers many possibilities to apply and explain the concepts of real options and bargaining in bilateral negotiations. This paper sets out to analyze the value of flexibility of an investment decision and discusses, in a second step, how the strategic power between the two parties involved is allocated. In academic literature, limited research has been done to find out about the combination of a real options analysis and the distribution of the trade surplus between the different players involved. This presents the following questions: Does an option in terms of the purchase of an aircraft have additional value in comparison to a classical and inflexible ¿buy now¿ decision for an airline? If this is the case, how much is this value worth and how is the trade surplus distributed between the two parties involved? Are there any hold-up problems? The following chapters will examine and answer these issues. Chapter two deals with a literature review on standard real options analysis in general and the airline sector in particular. In chapter three, background information about the airline industry is given and it is stressed why this sector is used for the capital budgeting approach.
